Welcome to the Surrey Festival of Musical Theatre and Performing Arts in collaboration with Broadwater School, Godalming. The Festival includes Musical Theatre, Speech & Drama, Dance, Art and Singing.

We have many classes to cater for all ages and all levels of ability. Our belief is that by offering creative and educational performance opportunities for young people we can elevate their talent and build confidence across many forms of artistic communication.

Most classes are competitive with a mark and places awarded.

We also offer non-competitive, novice classes which have no mark awarded. However, all entries receive verbal feedback directly from an adjudicator or experienced professional.

Trophies

Winners of classes are presented with a Medal after the class performance and some winners may be eligible for a trophy or cup. These are often presented at the final concert so if you think you may be in the running for one of those be sure to check back for details.

All trophies may be held for 11 months and are then to be returned in a clean condition. Any engraving are made at the Winner’s expense.

A full list of the Cups available can be found in the Syllabus.

Medals

Medals are given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Lanyards can be purchased on site for £1.

Medals can be purchased for Group performers who place for £5 including a lanyard.

Final Concert

Everyone is welcome to the final Celebration Concert which will feature different performers from across all the festival categories who have all been selected for their very high standard of performance. The concert provides a platform where families and performers can enjoy these performances again and will include the presentation of Bursaries and Overall Cups.

All funds raised from the concert will form a Bursary for the Overall Winner of the Festival.     Ticket price £10.

Audience

All classes may be watched. Please encourage all your family and friends to come and support you. You may attend any section or class with your ticket.

Entry fees are as follows:

ADULTS: Day pass £6, weekend pass £10

CHILDREN: Day pass £1.

Group classes will operate a pre booked ticket system as seating is limited and reserved for families of those performing on a first come first served basis.

Please Note: Whilst the Festival wishes to encourage performance for all, some categories require absolute silence i.e. Speech and Drama/Singing. Children under the age of 4 may not be permitted to watch and the committee reserves the right to ask any audience member to leave should their participation lead to the distraction or detriment of the performer.

Refreshments

Tea, Coffee and light refreshments are available during the festival. No food or drink may be consumed in the performing spaces.

WILLIAM POOL - SINGING

William Pool comes from Penzance, Cornwall. He was educated at Blundells School, Tiverton, and at Birmingham University. He trained as an operatic tenor at The Royal Northern College of Music, and, finally at The National Opera Studio, in London.

His professional debut was in 1979, as Jacquino in Fidelio on The Glyndebourne Tour, and then work followed for The Royal Opera, as well as various opera/concert projects, and significant work with the famous Monteverdi Choir  touring worldwide. Venues in Europe and USA include The South Bank, London, La Scala Milan, The Chatelet Theatre, Paris, The Lincoln Centre, New York, and Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. From 1985, William ‘crossed over’ to musicals and general theatre, performing in West End Shows (Chess, and Bernadette - original casts, and Les Miserables Royal Variety TV Performance) and in repertory theatre nationwide (Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Frederick in Pirates Of Penzance, King Henry in Man For All Seasons, Marcel in Piaf, Eldest Magician in Just So, Tony in West Side Story, Nika Magadoff in The Consul, Pantomime, and many other roles).

Since 1995 singing teaching has been a major part of his professional career, alongside his performing engagements. He has been a singing tutor at many of the London Musical Theatre Academies - including Mountview, Arts Ed, GSA, Central School of Speech And Drama, and Laine Theatre Arts. Many of his pupils have found success in The West End, on TV, and on prestigious cruise ships in Europe and USA.

From 2003 to 2012, while living in Brighton - alongside his teaching work - he ran two very successful stage schools (Brighton Young Performers and The Theatre Workshop).

Now, combined with his work as a singing tutor, William is busy managing and teaching on all the singing modules and the performance masterclasses in the Chichester University Conservatoire ‘Triple Threat’ musical theatre degree course.

He now lives permanently in Cornwall, having resettled in St Erth in 2022. But he still enjoys working at Chichester University Conservatoire. He is very happy to return to his family roots. Supporting the new young generation of singers and actors is a very fulfilling role to be playing, and it is an honour to be asked to be an adjudicator on the Surrey Festival Of Musical Theatre And Art 2026.
